2018 25 Paper: Snowy 2.0 Mechanical

Pumped storage is not a new technology, and was in use as early as 1890. Due to recent developments in reversible Francis pump-turbine technology it has become the most commonly used pumped storage technology and is making many more sites accessible, due to the economic advantages of this technology. The reversible pump-turbine doesn’t come without challenges however, such as inherent hydraulic instabilities that need to be controlled. This paper will provide a basis on what these challenges are, how they are introduced and how they are managed.
