2018 05 Paper: Kiewa No 1 Headrace Rock Trap

To our surprise in March 2017, AGL discovered significant stone damage to it’s McKay Creek power station Pelton turbines. Inspection of the tail race identified a relatively small amount of gravel, however given the concerns over runners with known design/manufacturing limitations, this paper describes the steps taken to manage the upstream rock trap situation and shares the lessons learnt and an innovative solution to buy time.
